Consultation has concluded
Electric Vehicles (EVs) are expected to become the predominant vehicle within the next decade. The federal government is targeting that, by 2035, all new passenger vehicles sold in Canada will be electric. Electric vehicles also reduce greenhouse gas emissions, noise pollution, and improve local air quality.
To prepare for this widescale transition and avoid future costly building retrofits, the Town of Canmore is considering changes to the Land Use Bylaw, to require that parking spaces in new buildings and developments are constructed with a minimum level of Level 2* EV charging capability.
The following table shows the proposed Land Use Bylaw requirements:
EV Infrastructure Required
Building Type (Class/Use)
Minimum Parking Spaces
EV Capable
All building types
100%
EV Ready
Non-Residential Class C
10%
Non-Residential Class D
20%
Detached, Duplex, Accessory, Manufactured, and Townhouse Dwellings, Apartment Building, Common Amenity Housing, Live/Work Studio, Bed and Breakfast, Home Occupation
1/dwelling
Care Facility
100%
EV Installed
Non-Residential Class C, Common Amenity Housing, Care Facility
5%
Non-Residential Class D, Apartment Building

*Level 2 charging requires a 40-ampere, 208/240-volt dedicated branch circuit (similar to the requirement for a clothes dryer). A 32 amp Level 2 charger will deliver about 40 km of battery range per hour of charge.
EV Capablemeans that sufficient electrical capacity is available for future EV Level 2 charging load. This requires that electrical equipment (e.g. distribution panels) be installed and wall and floor penetrations, or conduit, be completed as required to accommodate future EV charging cabling.
EV Readymeans that there is access to an energized outlet, capable of supplying a Level 2 charger (240 Volt, similar to a dryer plug).
EV Installed means the parking space is equipped with a Level 2 Charger.
